VR Games — The Key to Reaching Early Adopters

When I was a kid, I wanted to earn enough money to buy a 100 square mile lot of land that I could transform into a fantasy-based theme park. My idea was to provide a way to experience life as depicted in my favorite fantasy series, Dragonlance. I wanted to make this dream of walking in a small magical shire, interacting with highwaymen and fighting with swords a reality. Today, such a childhood ambition is not so far-fetched, especially when one considers the most recent advances in virtual/augmented reality.

Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that gamers are currently some of the most passionate key adopters of, and lobbyists for, VR-based technologies. And this high demand for VR games, combined with a relatively small community of VR content producers, creates a huge opportunity for developers.

As such, understanding what type of experiences gamers are looking for in their immersive VR worlds can prove tremendously helpful when developing for this rapidly growing technology. When you look to some of the most popular games on the Gear VR platform today — Minecraft, Land’s End and Darknet, among others — it’s worth noting some key similarities.

For one, they all provide a portal to an alternate reality for consumers to experience, and rightly so. VR is a natural progression of the 2D-based immersions of the past, now transformed into vibrant, 360-degree visual sensations that promise the next level of experience that gamers have been dreaming about. However, without products that deliver a truly enhanced, immersive experience, there will be less motivation for gamers to switch their existing large, community-based platforms to VR-based ones.

Additionally, many of today’s hottest VR games deliver truly cross-platform experiences. This is crucial, as presence on a number of platforms expands marketing opportunities, allows the essential larger communities of players to drive the social experience, and enables consumers to compare and contrast current gaming technologies to those that are VR-based.

Gamers have already proven themselves to be early adopters of many technologies ranging from the nascent PC market to various TV technology enhancements, hi-definition audio equipment peripherals and, most of all, an insatiable hunger for all things online. VR gaming is the logical next step in helping these tech-hungry gamers immerse themselves even further into their digital playgrounds — but it’s up to you to deliver that experience.
